Articles: John Cho – The Next Bruce Lee?

Let me say right now that I can’t stand it when one actor’s name is used to promote another (e.g. Shia LaBeouf is the new Tom Hanks), even if I’m a big fan of the actor in question. In fact, it drives me insane, but then I’m a terrible snob about things like that (and remaking Asian horror films, I can’t stand that, just release the original with subtitles!) and John Cho being called the next Bruce Lee makes my blood boil a bit.

I’ve heard it a lot lately, especially after the cast list for Star Trek was announced, and it drives me batty because Cho’s acting style is nothing like Lees. Both fantastic in their own right and deserve credit for being their own artists – not one who’s ‘outdated’ and another who’s ‘the new’ version of said outdated version.

Ryan Pangilinan posted a very interesting article on the subbject at Examiner.com:

Could John Cho be the new icon for young Asian-American boys coming up in today’s wacky multimedia world? I suppose it’s a possibility. While Cho is the furthest thing from a celebrated martial arts movie star (save that for Russell Wong), he has one of the most diverse acting resumes, particularly for an API ranging from support in indie fanfare such as “Better Luck Tomorrow” to his own vehicle, “Harold and Kumar…” More of Ryan Pangilinan’s Article
